Preparing a Balanced, Home-cooked Meal for Your Canine Companions

Hello, fellow pet lovers! This is Harry with another exciting and healthy home-cooked recipe for your furry friends — part of my ‘Recipes for Pets’ series, brought to you by PetsFI. We're returning to the realm of dog food, exploring slightly different ingredients than last time, yet the core principles remain the same. As I balanced studying at a veterinary school with being a pet owner, I've learned a great deal about this subject, so let's dive right into it.

Disclaimer: This particular breakfast meal doesn't represent the full spectrum of my dogs' diet. In reality, they enjoy a multitude of other foods, including raw meat and bones, alongside various treats throughout the day. The key takeaway here is diversity and quality. As pet owners, we should provide our canines with well-rounded diets that cover all their nutritional needs.

Let's move on to today's recipe. Our main ingredients include ground turkey, chicken livers, chicken hearts and gizzards, and stew meat. We'd also be using some pork and chicken. Utilizing sale items can greatly reduce the overall cost of your pet's diet, so always look for deals when shopping for ingredients.

Our vegetable selection consists of sweet potato, carrots, red kidney beans, and green beans. Don’t forget to check that any canned content is unsalted — excessive salt can be harmful to your dog. Ideally, use an unsalted beef broth to cook today's meal — again emphasizing the importance of low-sodium content in our pets' diets.

Next, let’s move to the grains. Here we will use eggs, ground rice, and a dash of oatmeal to soak up the extra broth. Note: we’re using the whole egg, shell included. In nature, dogs don't neatly crack open an egg, they eat the whole thing, shell included. This provides them with an additional source of calcium.

The cooking steps are quite straightforward. Simply throw all the ingredients into a pot and let them simmer for an hour or so. The beauty of this method is that there's no strict timing rule. Once your veggies are soft and squishable, you're good to go. Then, add the rice and broken eggs. Let the ingredients simmer until the rice has absorbed most of the broth and the eggs are cooked.

If you find that your stew has too much liquid, don't fret. Add a small amount of oatmeal or more rice until you reach the desired consistency.

Here's a final tip: consider preparing this meal in large quantities and storing it properly for future use. Freezing the meal in portioned containers can be a tremendous time-saver down the line.

As dog owners, we strive to demonstrate love and care for our little buddies. Providing them with fresh, home-cooked meals is a part of this caregiving routine. So, pick up the ladle, and let’s create some delicious, healthy food for our pets!
